Running for Maggie

Well hi there . . . long time, no blog.  Meh, life happens.
 Simply Sami
Quick post to shout out Sami, an amazing girl who blogs over at Simply Sami . . . In March of 2012, Sami's 16 year old sister Maggie died in a tragic car accident. This past March, a foundation was started in honor of Maggie . . . The Maggie Bertram Foundation For The Fine Arts.  Sami recently hosted a virtual 5K to raise money for the foundation as a tribute to her sister.

This event really touched my heart.  I lost a brother in a tragic car accident.  He was 19, and I was 17 . . . we were 21 months apart.  It's been a long time . . . May of 1991 to be exact, but Richard is never far from my thoughts.  That's a post for another day . . .

I ran my 5K on Sunday in memory of Maggie.  And by ran, I mean jogged . . . and walked.  I haven't laced up the running shoes lately for anything other than a brisk walk and guess what?  You use it or lose it.  Sucks.

At first I took off like the wind . . . I had a great stride and a pretty good pace.  In my head I knew it wasn't going to last, but it sure felt good.  And then . . . about 2-1/2 miles in it felt like my feet had turned to concrete blocks.  I checked, they didn't.  But it sure felt that way.

Life lesson.  Don't take the summer off from exercising because starting over ain't easy.  But I'm back . . . and it's on!
